Match the rod to the parent metal and pick a diameter close to the material thickness — 1.6mm for thin sheet, 2.4mm for general work, 3.2mm for heavier section. Use ER70S mild-steel rod for general steel, 308/316 for stainless and 4043/5356 for aluminium, and keep rods clean and stored dry so you feed a bright, uncontaminated end into the puddle.
