Choose the type for the job: 2% lanthanated (gold) is a safe all-rounder for AC and DC, thoriated (red) gives a sharp DC arc on steel but is mildly radioactive to grind, and zirconiated (white) suits AC aluminium. Match the diameter to your amperage, grind steel/stainless tungstens to a point lengthwise, and let them ball slightly for AC aluminium.
